Hard water and your hair: what actually changes

Water across most of the Kingdom carries a high mineral load — mainly calcium and magnesium. That is what hard water means, and hair notices it long before you do.

What you see

Minerals settle on the hair surface with every wash. Over weeks that build-up makes hair look duller, feel rougher to the touch, and hold less shine. Colour-treated hair shows it first, because the deposit sits unevenly and shifts how light reflects.

Lather is the other tell. Hard water fights foam, so many people reach for more shampoo than they need — which leaves more residue, not less.

What helps

  • A clarifying wash, weekly rather than daily. Enough to lift build-up without turning into a routine of its own.
  • Less product, more water. A smaller amount of shampoo worked through wet hair goes further than a large amount fighting the minerals.
  • Rinse longer than feels necessary. Most residue is simply under-rinsing.
  • Conditioner from mid-length down. The ends are older and take the most of it.

What will not change

Hard water is a fact of the tap, not a problem a bottle solves permanently. The aim is managing how hair looks and feels week to week, not eliminating the minerals.
